Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands, with their unique and beautiful nature, are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean between Norway and Iceland. The archipelago was originally populated by monks from Ireland before the Vikings came and took over around the year 800. Around the year 1000, the Faroe Islands were Christianized by the king of Norway. In the 1500s, the Faroe Islands, like the rest of the Nordic countries, were reached by the Reformation and a Lutheran state church was established. During World War II, the Faroe Islands were under the control of Great Britain while Denmark was occupied by Germany. In 1948, the Faroe Islands gained self-government under Denmark with its own flag and currency and currently has a population of about 55,000 people.
In 1865, colporteur and evangelist William Sloan from the Shetland Islands came to the Faroe Islands with a clear call from God and began preaching personal conversion and believer baptism. Year after year he went from house to house on the islands without seeing any success. It was not until 1878, after 13 years of tireless work, that the first person in the Faroe Islands came to faith through his preaching and was baptized in water. Today, almost 15% of the Faroe Islands' population belongs to the Christian denomination William Sloan started!
Indre Mission in the Faroe Islands, now known as “Kirkjuliga Heimamissiónin í Føroyum”, is a revival movement within the Faroese national church that reached the Faroe Islands in the second half of the 19th century. The movement came to the islands through Danish pastors and Faroese theology students who had come into contact with the Indre Mission in Denmark. Initially, the work was under the authority of the Danish Indre Mission, but in 1990 the Faroese branch became independent.
The movement focuses on personal conversion, Bible reading, Sunday school work, and an active life of faith in obedience to God and His Word. In addition to preaching, the Mission is involved in children’s and youth work, seamen’s mission, and foreign missions. There are mission houses and local initiatives in many villages across the country. One branch of the mission's work operates from a large children’s and youth center located centrally in the islands.
From its beginnings, the movement has had a significant influence on the religious life and moral culture of the Faroe Islands, and it is one of the largest revival movements on the islands after the "Brethern Church". In addition to broad support among the population, many Faroese pastors actively support and promote the movement, both within and through the framework of the national church.
The Pentecostal Movement arrived in Denmark around 1907 and reached the Faroe Islands somewhat later, gaining a real foothold in the 1920s and 1930s. The movement formed its first real community in the village of Tórshavn, where open meetings were held with a focus on baptism in the Holy Spirit, healing, and speaking in tongues.
Like in many other places, the movement initially faced strong opposition, including from other Christian circles. These regarded Pentecostalism as emotionally driven and theologically deviant. Despite the resistance, the movement grew, and independent congregations were established in several villages, including Skopun on Sandoy and Vágur on Suðuroy. Today, there are active Pentecostal churches, such as Filadelfia and City Church in Tórshavn, where a wave of conversions among young Faroese is currently taking place.
The Charismatic Movement, which began internationally in the 1960s, started making an impact in the Faroe Islands in the 1970s and 1980s, leaving deep and positive marks. Influences came through the Pentecostal movement as well as international charismatic conferences and literature, and the revival spread successfully among people from many social classes.
Both clergy and laypeople within the national church and various free churches opened themselves to the gifts of the Holy Spirit—especially prophecy, speaking in tongues, and healing. In contrast to the Pentecostal movement, the Charismatic Movement also operates within established churches and denominations, organizing prayer groups, worship meetings, and charismatic retreats. Today, the Faroe Islands are home to large and active congregations and church communities that have their origins in the charismatic movement.
In this prayer conference our hope is that all Gods people on the Faroes - that confess Jesus as their Lord and saviour - can worship and pray together and that the walls we have built around us and between us will be torn down and that a new revival will come to the Faroes...
The Faroe Islands are today the most Christian country in the Nordic countries and perhaps in all of Europe. It sends out more missionaries per capita than any other country in the world after South Korea.
It is a huge privilege to be able to arrange the next Nordic Prayer Conference in the Faroe Islands in one of the largest congregations there. We pray that God will use the conference for great blessing not only to the Faroe Islands but also to Iceland and Greenland as the extreme northwest corner in the north from Jerusalem. May the Lord do a mighty work on these islands for the blessing of the rest of the Nordic countries and all of Europe!
Do what you can to attend this unique conference and let us all pray much to God for it!
The Calling on the Nordic Nations
The Nordic nations with the cross in their flags have a common spiritual heritage and a common calling in the end times. Rolf Wiström expressed this as early as 1952 in his book Guds plan för Norden (God's Plan for the Nordic Nations): "We have the cross in our flags. God wants us to experience the power of the cross in our lives and pass it on to the longing millions of Europe."
In 1986, Kjell Sjöberg wrote in the compendium God's Kingdom Plan for the Nordic Nations:
"[The Lord says:] 'I have a plan for the Nordic nations therefore it is important that the intercessors from the Nordic nations meet each other. My glory shall explode in the Nordic nations... The Christians of the Nordic nations have important things to give to each other in order to come to a common maturity. ... The Nordic nations shall belong to me and from there I want to begin my work of liberation... The nations marked with the cross belong to me.'
"We strengthen the unity of the Nordic nations through every person who says yes to a divine calling that applies to the Nordic nations."
"We want to stand before the Lord for the Lordship of Jesus over the Nordic nations, and we want to connect the Nordic nations with Israel, and we also want to take the position where the Nordic nations become a base for what the Lord will do on the European continent."
During the Nordic Prayer Conference in the Faroe Islands on September 4-6, 2025, we will pray for the fulfillment of this calling!
